Sunday House Call, #839, June 12, 2022: Physicians around the campfire singing Kumbaya to solve the health care crisis and burnout

Although the Ontario Medical Association’s intention goal is to provide empathy for physicians suffering from burnout, as expressed in their latest Ontario Medical Association email, it does not address nor will it alleviate the real reasons for this predicament. I discuss one of likely many actionable solutions to improve patient access to their family practice whilst alleviating the burden that is pushing family doctors to retire and close their practices.

OMA Letter:

Dear Colleagues,

It has been a difficult couple of years for us, and things were tough for doctors even before the pandemic! Every day, I hear stories of colleagues who are burning out and leaving or planning to leave medicine. I have been working with the OMA Physician Health Program (PHP) to explore ways to begin re-building our medical community and soothe our wounded souls.

I would like to invite you to join this event on:

Thursday, June 23, 2022
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Our guest speaker is Dr. Teresa Marsh, PhD, MA, RN, RP, SEP Psychotherapist, Healer, Author, Yoga and Meditation, and Assistant Professor, Clinical Sciences with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine at Laurentian and Lakehead Universities. Dr. Marsh is recognized as a Healing Guru and through words, stories, poetry, and spirit. Using a trauma paradigm, she will lead us through interactive conversation, small group discussions, and more, all in support of compassionate mutual and self-care and strong medical communities.

Dr. Michael Kaufmann, founder of the OMA PHP and Medical Director Emeritus, will set the stage and facilitate the session.

I look forward to seeing you at the event. In the meantime, here are some great peer support tips.

Sincerely,

Dr Christine Tai
District 8 Chair
